Satire

In this weeks blog we talk about how satire plays a major role in the new hit series Rick and Morty. There is incongruity between American rhetoric and practices, for example the theory of equality, but the reality and fact of social and economic inequality in today's society. Or how one should be compared to how they really are in a capitalistic society. Satire helps reveal these incongruities by exposing the hypocrisy of our institutions, and by bringing up contemporary political issues. These vices are all criticized through satirical humor and are typically exaggerated to get comical relief.

Rick and Morty has a deeper meaning and has more to do than just cosmic space adventures between a grandfather and his grandson. For example, in the episode "Raising Gazorpazorp" we are challenged with the satire played on gender politics, and parenting. Morty, who accidentally becomes a parent of a half human/half robot does not follow the typical gender norms that a parent usually teaches to their children. It is Morty Jr's nature to be aggressive, and violent however, that is not how Morty decides to raise him.

He learns to be gentle and learns social norms to be accepted into society. What gets more intersting is when Rick and his grandaughter, Summer, travel to where Morty Jr is from to fix the robot that Morty Jr was birthed from. There we learn that their species is "so evolved" that they replaced the entire female gender with birthing machines  to focus on what they think was more important, war. After being abducted by a giant stone head Rick began to say to summer, "this lower tier of society is being manipulated through sex and advanced technology through a hidden ruling class.. sound familiar?"

We later find out that the Gazorpazorp species is being manipulated by . planet dominated by women who use the Gazorpazorps to keep reproduction going. The women refer to men as "primitive" and even ask summer if rick is her slave.  This episode challenged gender politics and parenting roles in such an ingenious way. It points out hypocrisy and social norms that have ingrained in our minds because of how our society is shaped.
