Midterm Question

The Simpson's episode, Last Exit to Springfield perpetuates the many prevailing capitalistic ideology.
we can see clearly from the beginning of the episode on who own/ runs what. In order for them to be successful they take advantage of those who are more susceptible to fear as a tactic to manipulate them. In this particular episode we see this point of view through Mr. Burns who owns most of everything in Springfield, and even the dentist who tries to sell the fancy Calvin Klein perfumed braces to shift away from the less appealing braces that are more affordable. This reaffirms the idea of capitalism that people pay more money for better, shiny objects.

However we can see some challenges against the ideology of capitalism. In the end the workers gain their dental plan back, showing how their voice and opinions can make an effect. When Mr Burns decided to turn the power off, the community comes together and are not as affected as Burns wanted. This shows how their is power within the community itself and that the owners are nothing without their workers.

Workers

1. The way the laborers will give up their dental plan for a keg of beer

2. At the beginning of the episode we are shown an atom worker, working at the plant who appears to be a thief at first who reminds them how the union will work against them and become corrupt.

3. Another scene was when Homer came home to explain his newly elected position within the union and how he lacks the knowledge to actually negotiate plans and regulations. This is shown when Bart persuades him to exchange his door stop with Homer's danish.

4. Homer referring to being head of the union and comparing it to being part of the mafia

5. Homer being portrayed as being unintelligent when being offered a "under the table" by Mr. Burns is another example of satire.

Management

1. At the beginning we are shown a villain and directly cuts to a scene of Mr. Burns

2. Mr. Burns laughing and watching the window washer struggle for his life.

3. Mr. Burns grandfather being very greedy and firing the worker who was "supposedly" stealing 6 atoms

4. Mr. Burns shutting down the power plant

5. Mr. Burns dropping off Homer on a helicopter, reflecting his wealth

Comments

  1. I was thinking about how people that are materialistic make sacrifices when it comes to utility for fashion or being cool. Like unless calvin klein has some mint perfume, Ill go ahead and not get sprayed in the mouth with fragrance for a premium!
