Vogue Cover

Vogue's cover of LeBron James and model Gisele Bundchen compared to the Army flyer is very questionable. To start off, I do not understand why the cover depicts either of them in these exact poses. Yes, Gisele looks absolutely stunning in her shot, however LeBron could have had a different picture on the cover. Especially since Vogue is after all a fashion magazine, they could have definitely made the effort to capture him in a more model like style. It would have been more refreshing to see him model for the magazine instead of this specific picture. When comparing both covers, we can see a stereotype of how African American men are portrayed as violent and aggressive beings. What is very interesting is that the ape on the left is carrying what looks like a (bat?), with the word "culture" written on it. The way LeBron is aggressive showing this "ape" like manner is also a form of exoticism. The Army cover assimilates our society to believe that American culture is the only civilized culture there is, by labeling the ape "this mad brute" and depicting it to be savage and uncivilized- like. The damsel in distress also insinuates that women are helpless beings and are unable to defend themselves. This makes it seem that, women are in need of a strong counterpart when this is not relatively true. LeBron being defined as just an athlete in a sense, excludes him from other stuff that he may have accomplished, making him a token by limiting him and dehumanizing him by these limitations.
